Dumpster rental or a hauling crew: which one for this job
Dumpster rental is one of the most-searched home services in Colorado Springs, and for some jobs it is the right call. We haul for a living and will still tell you when a steel box on the driveway is the better buy. Here is the comparison by job.
How each one works
A roll-off dumpster is delivered to your driveway, sits there for a rental period, you fill it yourself, and the company hauls it away and charges by the size of the box and the weight. You do all the loading. A hauling crew comes with a truck, loads everything itself from wherever it sits, and leaves the same day. You do none of the loading. That difference, who carries, decides most of the comparison.
By the job
| Job | Usually better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long remodel, weeks of steady debris | Dumpster | Debris goes in as it's made; no coordinating pickups |
| Weekend demo, one phase of debris | Crew | One pickup, no box sitting for a month, no loading |
| Garage or basement cleanout | Crew | The carry is the job; a box still needs you to fill it |
| Estate or whole-house | Crew | Sorting, donation routing, stairs, and the family's pace |
| Move-out on a date | Crew | Same-day, dated receipt, nothing left on the drive |
| Roofing tear-off | Either | Roofers often own the box; otherwise by-the-ton hauling |
| Heavy debris: concrete, soil, tile | Compare | Both charge by weight; a box has a weight cap and overage fees |
| HOA street, tight driveway | Crew | No box on the driveway, no permit question, no scraped concrete |
Things people don't expect with a dumpster
- The weight cap. Boxes come with a tonnage limit and overage charges above it. Heavy debris hits the cap before the box is full.
- The HOA. Briargate, Monument, the Powers corridor and most newer subdivisions have rules on dumpsters in driveways, how long and sometimes whether at all.
- The driveway. A loaded roll-off can mark or crack a driveway; boards under the rails help. On a steep west-side drive the delivery itself can be a problem.
- The refusals. Mattresses, tires, electronics, refrigerant appliances and anything hazardous are typically not allowed in the box, or carry fees, same as with us.
- You still carry. Everything in the basement still has to come up the stairs and over the side of a box that is taller than you.
Things people don't expect with a crew
- It has to be ready. The crew prices and loads what is there on the day. If the demo is half done, you book a second pickup.
- Sorting is part of it. The crew pulls usable items for donation or recycling where possible, which takes a few minutes and lowers the tipping fee.
- The look comes first. No firm price on the phone. The crew sees the load and names it, and you can say no.
Our honest rule
If debris is being made steadily for more than a couple of weeks, rent the box. If the job is a cleanout, a move-out, or a one-day demo, or if stairs, a steep drive or an HOA are involved, call the truck. If it is heavy, compare the two by weight before deciding.
Asked often
Can you do the demo and the haul?
Small demo, yes: cabinets, carpet, a deck, a shed, non-structural walls with the contractor's say-so. We don't touch load-bearing walls or the gas and electrical service.
How does a crew price construction debris?
By the truckload and the weight: $300 to $800 per truckload in 2026, light drywall and cabinets at the low end, tile and concrete at the top.
Can I have a pickup between phases?
Yes. That's how most contractors use us: demo day, trim-out day, one invoice per pickup or per job.
What if the HOA won't allow a dumpster?
Then the crew is the answer. Nothing sits on the driveway overnight.
Is a small dumpster cheaper than a half truck?
Sometimes, for a light load you can fill yourself. Compare the box price plus your loading time against about $375 for a half truck loaded by us.
